A rotary coal cutter of the type having a cylindrical drum 12 with a radially projecting helical wall 11 provided with picks 17, in which the outer peripheral surface of the helical wall has sockets 15, each of which directly receives a pick, the socket and pick being shaped so as to prevent relative rotation. <IMAGE>
