Abstract

The construction of a chimney having concrete outer shaft (1) and a brickwork inner shaft, divided into sections so as to allow for thermal expansion, has intermediate supports (3) which rest on ledges (2) on the inner wall of the outer shaft. These supports (3) each have an integrally formed wall (4) at least one metre in height which supports a section of the inner shaft, the innermost surface of each wall (4) being protected from heat and fumes within the inner shaft by the upper portion of the next lowest section of the inner shaft. The sections of the inner shaft may include specially shaped bricks (6, 12) which provide protection for the inner shaft whatever the state of expansion and their outer walls may be lined by an insulating layer held in place by glass fibre belts (14). <IMAGE>
