Abstract

Labelling apparatus including means for controlling container position for application of labels comprises a conveyor for conveying containers along the apparatus, container registration means 14 for spacing such containers along the conveyor, overhead container engaging means 16 for holding the containers in registered position during application of labels to the sides of the container at 24, and label compression means 32 which compresses the labels against the containers sides and engages the containers prior to the overhead engaging means disengaging the containers, in order to maintain control on the container position. The label compression means comprises opposed pads 34 which travel at conveyor speed and hold the container for receipt on its top of a label strip from applying means 38 so that the strip is accurately applied to the container top. <IMAGE>
