Abstract

A disk file of the accessing head type has a disk/spindle assembly supported by and within an enclosure wail base, enclosing the assembly about its axis of rotation. The disk/spindle assembly centre of gravity is located on the neutral plane of the base. Actuators for moving the read/write heads of the file are predominantly supported by land lie within the enclosure wall base so that their centres of force lie as close as possible to the neutral plane. This file structure minimises both dynamic and static off-track error resulting from out-of-plane bending of the base due to actuator reaction forces or thermal effects. <IMAGE>
