Abstract

A pair of single optic fibers 46, 48 are coupled by insertors into a guide comprising three glass rods (two 22, 26 shown) which are disposed in a side- by-side array 20 parallel to one another with longitudinal peripheral portions of adjacent rods in contact with and connected to each other to form a cusp- shaped interstitial channel therebetween. The channel includes open ends and an arcuate portion at the ends of the rods forces both ends of the fibers inserted into the guide into one of the corners of the cusp-shaped channel so that the ends of the fibers, even if of differing diameter, are aligned with each other. This fibre diameter is not critical to optical matching, nor is exact length. <IMAGE>
