Abstract

A comparator circuit comprises a differential amplifier which is switchable from a stable to an unstable state, and vice versa. The differential amplifier comprises a balanced long-tailed pair of transistors Q1, Q2 which may be FETS with a field effect transistor (F.E.T.) Q3 having a channel connected between the collectors or drains of the long-tail pair and a gate connected to a pulse generator. The F.E.T. normally shorts together the collectors, but pulses from the pulse generator restore differential gain to the amplifier. During the presence of each pulse, a differential output signal is produced whose polarity depends on the imbalance in the differential inputs of the two halves of the long-tailed pair. With no input signal, random noise produces equal numbers of output pulses of each polarity. An input signal below the noise level is detectable, as it alters the pulse polarity distribution. <IMAGE>
