Abstract
A vehicle spring brake-actuator comprises a cylinder 1 with a piston 3 loaded by springs 5, a screw-threaded piston rod 7 running in a nut 8 mounted in the piston 3, a control member 10 which engages the nut 8, and a detent plunger 11 which normally prevents the control member 10 and nut 8 from rotating. Pulling a ring 13 releases the detent plunger from the member 10, which rotates with the nut 8 to allow the piston to move under the force of the springs 5. This rotation of the member 10 is retarded by a retarder ring 14 which becomes pressed against a part of the cylinder 1 firstly by fluid impelled by the piston 3 and then by force from the piston 3 through resilient force-transmitting means 15. There are cushion means 16 to finally retard and arrest the piston 3. <IMAGE>
