Abstract
A process for phosphating a metal, eg Fe, steel, Zn, Al or their alloys, with an aqueous acid composition containing phosphate and zinc ions, in which an iron salt (preferably ferric) is added to the composition on preparation and during replenishment such that the weight ratio of iron:zinc is from 0.001:1 to 0.2:1.
