Abstract

In the field of hydrocarbon processing employing a fluidizable catalyst in a riser reaction zone it is important to achieve a uniform mixture of catalyst and hydrocarbon across the cross-sectional area of the reaction zone at different elevations therein and to avoid excessive wall temperatures. The present invention provides a distributor (2) for this purpose having a truncated cone (2A) with its small diameter end adapted to be connected to the hydrocarbon feed inlet means situated at the lower end of the reaction zone and a circular plate (2B) with several holes through it fitting into the large diameter end nozzles (2C) are fitted into one or more of the holes to direct hydrocarbon feed into the central portion of the reaction zone and other nozzles (2C) are fitted into two or more of the holes to direct hydrocarbon feed to impinge against the inside wall of the reaction zone downstream of the outlets of these nozzles. The invention also provides a method of achieving such uniform description in which a portion of the feed is fed vertically upwards into the central portion of the reaction zone whilst a further portion is directed upwardly at an angle to the vertical so that it impinges on the inside wall of the reaction zone downstream of the inlet. The invention finds particular use in the fluidized catalytic cracking of hydrocarbons. <IMAGE>
