Abstract

A handling device for mounting and dismantling blast pipes (36) of a shaft furnace is secured to the lifting arm (72) of a carriage-mounted fluid pressure operated positioning unit. The handling device (70) is pivotable by itself about a vertical axis, while when combined with the lifting arm the resulting assembly is pivotable about a second, different vertical axis (68), giving rise to a combination of possible movements facilitating access to the blast pipes even where there is a second, upper row of such pipes. The carriage has a removable orientation-adjusting hinge on which various working tools, including the handling device, can be mounted, the hinge constituting the second vertical axis. <IMAGE>
