Abstract

A filter comprises a plurality of layers of respectively higher and lower refractive index so arranged and of a selected thickness to reflect light within a range for which the layer thicknesses are selected to be equal to approximately one quarter wavelength, and at least one layer is absorbent to light within said range. The filter 19 in use is mounted upon a silicon solar cell 11, the layers of the filter 19, except for the absorbing layer, being transparent to wavelengths in the range of 250 nm to 1200 nm, and the reflection wavelength range for which the filter is designed being 250 nm to 350 mm. Materials for the filter layers include Ta2O5 and fused silica and the absorbing layer may by of Ti2O3. The cell also has anti- reflecting layers 13, 21, a cement layer 22 to be protected from the UV and a cover 16. <IMAGE>
