Abstract
The device comprises, in combination, a pattern-reproducing electrode and a recording material comprising an electrically conductive base coated by a conductive recording layer. The recording layer comprises particles of a semiconductive oxide (such as TiO2), a colour coupler, a developer (the coupler and developer being capable of reacting together to form a coloured dye) and a binder (preferably a water-soluble polymer). The device also includes a source of metal ions (such as silver ions) which, on application of an electric field between the base and the pattern- reproducing electrode, are capable of migrating to the surface of the oxide particles to cause dye-forming reaction between the coupler and the developer. The recording method comprises applying an electric field between the electrode and the base; only low voltages are needed and a wide variety of colours are obtainable.
