Pivoted and sliding jaw wrenches; jaw faces; handles and shanks.-An adjustable wrench, of the type comprising a fixed jaw 15 carried by a handle 2 formed in one with a casing 4 adapted to receive the shank 12 of a sliding jaw 5, is provided with an adjusting nut 14 freely mounted on the shank 12, a spiral spring 8, which normally tilts the jaw 5 forwards, being interposed between a wall of the casing and the shank. The spring 8, which is enclosed in a recess 21, engages the shank 12 through the intermediary of a shoe 23 provided with bent up prongs 25 disposed within the spring. The shank 12 rocks about a fulcrum 31 on the wall 32 of the casing, the line of pressure of the spring being below this point. The nut 14 bears against a cam surface 18 on the end 17 of the casing 4, the arrangement providing a final grip. The part 17 has lateral extensions which increase the bearing surface for the nut and protect it against undesired rotation when the wrench is laid down.. The nut 4 is retained on the shank 12 by bending up the last thread 19 or by means of a U-shaped device engaging in the channel of the screw thread. The handle is tapered both as regards width and thickness. In a modified form the spring 8 is mounted in a recess in the wall 32, the fulcrum 31 is on the inner wall and the line of pressure is above the fulcrum. Specification 198,369 is referred to.
