Abstract

In an actuator for vehicle wheel brakes comprising a cylinder 7 divided by a piston 9 into two separate chambers 11, 12, and a spring 17 located in one of the chambers 11 and arranged to bias the piston 7, a one-way valve 19 which permits the flow of air from within the spring chamber 11 to atmosphere, but prevents the flow of air into that chamber through the valve is provided. The gas within that chamber preferably has a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure when the chamber has its smallest volume. The valve 19 prevents the ingress of corrosive moisture and dirt to the spring chamber 11. <IMAGE>
