Abstract

Fluid-pressure.-A hydraulic brake for vehicles comprises two cylinders adjoining at their open ends, a brake-applying piston in the one cylinder and a piston valve in the other, means for deliver. ing liquid between the two pistons and an outlet port for the liquid which is controlled by the piston valve. As shown, the valve cylinder C is preferably integral and coaxial with the brake cylinder A and a rotary pump G is adapted to deliver liquid from a reservoir F through the port H into the space between the brake-applying piston B and the valve piston D. Normally the liquid returns freely to the reservoir by ports C<2>, but the piston D can be operated by the pedal E to restrict these ports and so to establish the desired braking pressure in the cylinders for applying the brakes. By means of a projection D<2> on the piston D, the piston B may be directly actuated when the fluid-pressure is not available. The pump may be driven directly or indirectly from the propeller shaft of the vehicle. If it is desired that the fluid-pressure may be operative for either direction of movement of the vehicle, an arrangement of two pumps may be used with the necessary back-pressure valves to prevent return of the liquid through the pump which is inoperative at the time.
