Abstract

197,857. Lodge-Cottrell, Ltd., (Anderson, E.). June 30, 1922. Gases and vapours, electrically precipitating suspended ,particles from.-A potential difference sufficient to cause translation of ions and precipitation of suspended particles but insufficient to cause ionization by collision in the gas, is maintained between electrodes one of which is kept sufficiently hot to emit ions. In the arrangement shown, a wire or like electrode 4 situated within a tubular collecting electrode 1 and supported by insulated bars 5 within enlarged chambers 9, is electrically heated by current from a transformer 13, regulated by means of a resistance or inductance 18. The high pressure secondary of another regulable transformer 23 is connected to earth and through a thermionic valve 21 or other rectifier to the wire electrode 4. This is preferably maintained negative so as to emit electrons. A third transformer 33 supplies heating current to the cathode of the valve. All the transformers are fed from a common source of current.
