Abstract

196,098. Rheinauer, M. Jan. 18, 1922. Coating materials in long lengths.- In a machine for marbling paper of the kind in which the paper is drawn through a stationary trough containing sizing on the surface of which colour is sprayed, uneven colouring at the longitudinal edges of the paper is prevented by providing the bottom and sides of the container with movable members which impart motion to the sizing. As shown, the outer walls, 18, Fig. 1, are provided with driven endless metallic belts 19 passing around pulleys 20, 21, 22 and the inner walls 17 are provided with a driven endless belt 16 passing around pulleys 13, 14. The belt 16 is provided with pins adapted to engage lugs 67, Fig. 6, on trays 65 having flanges 68 forming paddles for propelling the liquid. The formation of ripples on the surface of the sizing is prevented by dams 69, 70, and anv colour which has not been removed from the surface is intercepted by heated rollers 32, 33 which dip into the sizing and are provided with a scraper. The paper is fed in a fixed plane between adjacent runs of the belts 16, 19 from a reel 58, Fig. 7, by means of a feed roller 73, idler rollers, and a drum 60 which is arranged so that the paper 63 dips slightly below the surface of the sizing and comes into contact with the floating colour.
