Compiling and tabulating statistics mechanically.-In a machine for registering statistical and like particulars from perforated cards the adding mechanism consists of a mutilated toothed wheel having nine teeth rotating synchronously with the card feed, and a plurality of toothed adding wheels each of which is adapted to be released by an electromagnet so as to engage with that tooth on the mutilated wheel corresponding to the number of the perforation under the sorting brush; the selective mechanism comprises a number of arcs of contact plates each arc having a contact brush wiping over it and being provided with a single electromagnet, all the electromagnets of the arcs being coupled to a single switch so that only when all the magnets are energized is the switch closed to complete the adding-circuit (partially) or a sorting circuit. In the Figure the two arcs of contact plates are wired for perforations 7, 3 in the first two columns of the card, so that the adding mechanism will only add the characteristics in the last three columns of cards having perforations 7, 3 in the first two columns. The card is fed in the direction of the arrow and the contact arms c<1>, c<2> wipe over the arcs C<1>, C<2> from 9 to 0 synchronously with the card feed so that for a card perforated at 7 in the first column a circuit is completed through the brush V<1>, the drum H, battery K, arms c<1>, plate 7 and magnet R<1> so that the latter releases the first arm of the switch R. Similarly the brush V<2> through the perforation 3 in the second column actuates magnet R<2> so that the switch R is now finally dropped to make contact at G. The card is now in the position shown and on further rotation of the drum H, contact is first-made through brush T<3> and perforation 7 in the last column, battery K, arm c<1> arcuate plate B, and switch R so that the magnet F<3> is energized and releases its respective catch so that the adding wheel E<3> comes into engagement with tooth No. 7 on the mutilated wheel D having 9 teeth, the completion of the rotation of wheel D causing the wheel E<3> to add seven units to the counter. Similarly for perforations 6 and 4 in the 5th and 6th columns the hundreds and tens wheels E<1>, E<2> are released so as to engage with teeth Nos. 6 and 4 respectively of the wheel D. After the passage of each card through the machine all parts are restored to normal; instead of the switch R partially completing an adding circuit, it may complete a circuit through a sorting flap.
