Abstract
194,741. Coats, A. Sept. 20, 1921. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Variable-speed gearing. - In means for transmitting power between shafts at speeds automatically varying inversely with the load, a driving-shaft B carries a casing A in which is arranged a recess C containing balls which are thrown outwards by centrifugal force between non-radial and preferably curved vanes J so as to engage with similar vanes K in a corresponding recess in a member D secured to the driven shaft E. The balls transmit part of their accumulated energy to the driven shaft and return to the casing A for re-acceleration. A thrust bearing H is provided. Two or more such devices may be arranged in series concentrically or side-by-side, or both, the recesses being arranged successively farther from the shaft or the balls being increased in diameter to compensate for reduction in speed of working.
