Coating-machines.-In an apparatus for coating fruit &c. with a waxy substance, such as a mixture of paraffin and " gasoline," by means of rotary brushes the coating-material is kept in a homogeneous condition by agitators working in the receptacle whence it is delivered to the brushes by means such as rotary brushes. The fruit passes from a shoot 35 to the inclined rotary brushes 10 which receive coating-material from brushes 18 rotating in a receptacle 15. The brushes 18 are rotated by the brushes 10, and to secure good engagement the brushes 18 and the portions 10<a> of the brushes 10 which engage with them are made of stiff material such as fibre, the remainder of the brushes 10 being of softer material, such as horsehair. The receptacle 15 is supported on wedge-shaped block 26, 27 and its height can be adjusted by moving the blocks 27 by means of a screw 29. In the receptacle 15 is an agitator 20 consisting of two helical blades and driven by chain gearing and a clutch from a shaft 12 which also drives the brushes 10 through bevel gearing. Splash-boards 38 catch material thrown off by the brushes 10 and draining-channels 37 return it to the receptacle 15. A cover 36 is also provided.
