Abstract
192,398. Kruse, O. V. Jan. 27, 1922, [Convention date]. Fluid-actuated valves.-A valve device adapted to act as a throttle valve in one direction and automatically to stop a flow in the reverse direction comprises a main valve 4 adapted to cooperate with a seat 23 and formed integrally with a piston working in a cylinder supported axially in the pipe line by webs 3. The nose of the valve member has an orifice 7 controlled by a pilot valve 16 itself fitted with a loose ball valve 16<1> and carried by a hollow spindle 17 formed with rack teeth engaging a pinion 18 on a shaft extending to the outside of the casing. When the valve is open, pressure in the annular chamber 5 equals that in the pipe line owing to leakage at 21 and pipe line is also admitted to pressure in the chamber 6 through passages 7, 9, 10, 12, 11. To close the valve under hand control the valve 16 is moved to engage or nearly engage its seat when the ball valve will be pressed to its seat to allow pressure to bank up in the chamber 6. causing the main valve to move forward to follow the movement of the pilot valve. When closing automatically with reversed flow, the ball valve opens to admit fluid to the chamber 6 to close the valve, the latter part of the closing movement being retarded owing to the passage 11 being closed and the fluid being supplied to the actuating chamber through a valve controlled pipe connection 13. Where the fluid is supplied by a pump the chamber 5 may be connected by a pipe 24 to the pump casing so that in the event of the pump failing: the drop of pressure in the pipe 24 starts the closing of the valve in advance of the actual reversal of flow. The pipe 24 may be fitted with a venting valve 31 normally held closed against the action of a spring 52 by pressure supplied through a restricted pipe 47 acting on a piston,. which pressure is released by a pilot valve 41 controlled by a solenoid 43 in the 'electrical circuit of the motor driving the pump. To allow the valve to function automatically, the external worm wheel 61 is secured to the spindle 19 by a pressure actuated clutch 59 so that when the valve 41 is opened pressure on the piston 63 is relieved and the worm wheel declutched. For small valve the hand-wheel may be secured in the opening position by a pin lightly acted on by a spring.
