Squirting; rolling; shearing.-In the manufacture of brass and other metal sheets, strips, rods, tubes, and wire, the metal is extruded and passed between rolls without reheating. In making strips the metal is forced through the die 2 and passes between pairs of rolls 7, 8, 9, a gas or other heating- furnace 10, 11 being arranged between successive pairs. The furnaces have traps 12 to prevent loss of heat, and shears 15 are provided to cut off the waste end. After leaving the rolls 9, the strip may pass between slitting- rolls, which may divide it into small square rods to be finished by drawing. In the manufacture of the close-jointed brass tubes, skelping-rolls, &c. are arranged after the last pair of strip-rolls, or a tube may be extruded and the mandrel extend through the die and enter the gap between the rolls. A number of rods may be extruded from one die and passed between rolls with a number of gaps.
