Abstract

8229. Tweedale, C. L. June 3. [Cognate Application, 9073/15.] Hulls; compartments.- The method of ship-construction consisting in the provision of inner and outer hulls divided by transverse vertical partitions C, D, Fig. 1, which is already known for cargo ships carrying oil or grain &c., is adapted for passenger ships with the object of saving life at sea by rendering such ships unsinkable. The inner and outer hulls are made of approximately equal capacity. Kingston valves K, Fig. 5, are applied to the bottom of each compartment A, B operable from the deck level at W so as to flood any one or a set of compartments so as to balance or trim the ship. Water-tight doors are provided in the partitions and inner hull, and hatches or sliding doors are arranged to close staircases leading from the upper deck to the bottom of each compartment A, B. The inner hull preferably projects through the outer hull at the bottom, as shown.
