7244. Yarwood, G. A. May 14. Systems for continuous-current motors only.-An electro-magnetic switch 4 for starting a motor has a a shunt winding 5 and an opposed series winding 6 so that the switch 4 closes, as the motor speed rises, owing to the predominating influence of the shunt coil. The switch may short-circuit the series coil 6 as well as the resistance 7, and part of the shunt coil may be short-circuited by auxiliary contacts. Where the load is heavy, the resistance is cut out in stages by a number of switches with series and shunt coils. An electro-magnetic line switch may be included in the circuit and controlled by start and stop buttons. The shunt coil 5 may be connected in the exciting-circuit as shown, or directly across the mains.
