Abstract

5717. Tucker, J. H., and Crabtree, J. A. Oct. 19. Switches, quick-action. - Consists in a tumbler swith of the series-parallel type which, with the movable contact-arm in one position, affords a single electric connexion for the series circuit and with the arm in the other position affords a dual connexion for the parallel circuit. According to the invention, the movable contact-member has five or six contacts co-operating with four stationary contacts and the movable contact.member involves one or more connexions which, in effect, are arranged diagonally between its contacts. The switch is of the quick-action type with the contacts mounted upon the tumbler member, as shown, or upon a separate pivoted member operated by a tumbler and has a telescopic spring device v to produce the quick action. In the form shown in Fig. 4, in which the component parts of the movable contact - member are shown ready for assembly, the sheet-metal contact plates e, f, shaped as shown to provide five contacts g, h, l, j, k. are provided with insulating-bushes e,<1> f<1> and are insulated from each other by plates p, m, u. The two positions of the switch are shown diagrammatically in Figs. 6 and 7. In the first or parallel position, Fig. 6, the stationary contacts 1, 3 and the stationary contacts 2, 4 are connected together. In the second or series position, Fig. 7 contacts 2, 3 only are connected together, diagonally. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, in which three plates with six contacts 10, 11, 14, 15, 17, 18 are provided, the connexions shown in Figs. 8 and 9 are afforded. In the, first or parallel position, Fig. 8, the fixed contacts 12, 20 and 13, 19 are interconnected diagonally. In the second or series position, Fig. 9, the contacts 12, 13 only are interconnected. The switch may be constructed with an intermediate off position and may be operated by a pivoted member oscillating about an axis at right-angles to the base or by a sliding member.
