Abstract

3710. Patterson, J. G. March 8. Stands for charging secondary batteries, particularly those employed in miners' lamps. Each cell is placed in an insulating acid - proof base shaped so that the cell can be easily and quickly pushed on and off to make and break contact with the terminals on the charging frame or rack, and also designed to act as a reservoir for any liquid which may escape. The frame is preferably provided with iron or other metal shelves or bars a on, or between, which the bases b rest detachably; thus, the bases may have depending projections c' engaging between the two bars a, a, or, when a shelf is used, the bases may interlock with it by means of integral pegs engaging with suitable holes in the shelf. The bases b are, suitably, trays, preferably of glass, which are open on their front sides or ledges d<1> and have side guides or ledges e along which the cells f can be slid into position. A recess g in the base is formed intermediately of the side ledges e; it may be sunk below the level of the bars a if desired (as indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 2), or it may even be of such size as to act, in case of need, as a reservoir for the whole of the liquid normally contained in the cell.
