Linkage gears. - Consists in a duplex gear in which each valve is moved to the open position by the other engine, and is moved to the mid or closed position by its own engine. Fig. 1 shows the general arrangement of the gear, the cylinders being shown as displaced for convenience; Fig. 5 shows a sectional plan; and Fig. 5<A> an elevation of part of the gear. The valve of the engine A is shown as admitting steam to the left-hand end of the cylinder. As the piston moves to the right, its lever 1, by means of a cam-shaped lever 4, moves the bar 5 and valve spindle 20 to the left to bring the valve to its mid or closed position. When the piston of the engine B moves from left to right, its lever 18 swings the short lever 11 from right to left and moves the valve over to the left to admit steam to the right-hand end of the cylinder A. As the piston moves from right to left, its lever 1, by means of the short lever 4, closes the valve again.
