Making, finishing, and ornamenting building blocks and slabs.-Friezes, cornices, columns, capitals, panels, &c., are made by lining a mould with stone chippings, broken pieces of stone, glass, &c. and pouring in a backing of cement, gypsum, &c. The faces of the pieces of stone &c. which are to be exposed are, before being fitted in place in the mould, coated with a substance capable of preventing the moulding-material employed from adhering to the exposed face of the finished product. This coating-substance may be pitch, paraffin, wax, &c., which is used to stick the pieces of stone to the mould before pouring in the backing-material.
