21,166. Lentz, H. Oct. 18, 1913, [Convention date]. Clutches and speed-varying mechanism.-In an hydraulic transmission gear, the pumps, motors, and regulating-valves are of equal width and are arranged in a casing of uniform width with their axes parallel, so that the driving-liquid is in the form of a band of approximately constant width. The pumps A are mounted on the driving-shaft D, and the motors B on the driven shaft F, both being mounted in the same casing C. The pumps A may consist of several elements of different sizes, one or more of which may be cut out by the regulating- valve in order to vary the speed of the driven shaft. In the position shown, the valves K, L are set for forward running of the gear, the dotted lines showing the position for reverse running. The valves may be set so that the whole or a part of the liquid is diverted from the motor through the by-pass conduit Q<1>. The gear is particularly applicable for use with ships' steam turbines.
