Abstract
16,924. White & Co., J. S., and Wright, H. T. July 16. Planes, arrangement and construction of; propelling. -Relates to aeroplanes in which the laterally extending portions of the wings are hinged to the central fixed part and are capable of being turned back to lie parallel with the fuselage for storage, and consists in providing sliding contact gearing, such as a rack and pinion, for moving the wings into and out of the flying position. Means are provided to prevent the motor from being started until the wings are locked in the flying position. The movable portion 3 of the wing is hinged at 5 to the fixed part 1 and is provided with a hinged rack-bar 13 slidable in a pivoted stirrup 17 and engaging a pinion 18 actuated by worm gear 19, 33. The worm shaft is provided with a handle 20 operable when the machine is at rest from the front of the machine. The wings are locked in the extended position by bolts 42 passing through a metal cap 38 on the spar 8 and a clip 39 secured to the spar 14. The bolts are locked in position by a pivoted catch 47 which engages the narrowed part 43 of the bolts. When the bolts are withdrawn, they are carried by a bracket 46 secured to the clip 39 and formed with holes for holding the cylindrical heads 44 of the bolts. In this position of the bolts, the catch 47 engages with a fixed contact-plate 50 connected with the magneto of the motor, so that the magneto is earthed. The rack-and-pinion gear is arranged on the lower wing of a biplane, and the upper foldable wings are provided with a spring locking- bolt to secure them to the central fixed portion.
