Washing vegetables.-A machine for cleaning and washing carrots, parsnips, and other edible roots comprises a reciprocatory sieve o by which the roots are fed into a rotary skeleton cylinder a mounted in a water-tank e and provided internally with a worm conveyer h, the roots, on emerging from the cylinder, being carried up an incline t by transverse slats s attached to endless chains q, and delivered into suitable receptacles. The driving-shaft w is connected to the shaft f of the rotary cylinder by bevelgearing, and to the upper drum r of the elevator by chain-and-sprocket gearing. The sieve o is reciprocated by rods coupled to straps surrounding eccentrics on the shaft w. Water is sprayed on the roots as they ascend the slide t by means of pumps u worked by a crankpin on the sprocket-wheel 2; or a semi-rotary pump driven by an eccentric on the shaft w may be provided. The worm conveyer is formed of timber slats h of approximately triangular section with rounded edges. Rotary or reciprocating brushes may be arranged within the lower part of the cylinder a, and may be driven by gearing from the shaft f.
