Abstract
5290. Short, H. L., Short, A. E., and Short, H. O. March 2. Planes, arrangement of.-In an aeroplane in which the wings can be rotated about vertical axes so as to lie parallel with the fuselage for storage, the hinges connecting the rear spars 14 to the central fixed portion 2 are formed of squared sockets 15, 18 connected together by a hinge bolt 21. The head 22 of the bolt 21 is formed with eyelets for the attachment of the stay wires. The front spars 5 are provided with a socket 6 having a tapered plug 9 which fits into a socket 3 on the fixed member 1, and the parts are secured by a removable pin 11 parsing through the holes 4, 10. The pin 11 of the upper spar is formed with a screw-threaded portion to engage with the screwed socket 13. The front spars are connected together by a rod 25, Fig. 1, and the front and rear spars are connected by an horizontal rod 26, Fig. 3.
