Abstract

Aerostats.-The envelopes of balloons and airships are formed of double walls a, b connected together by strips of fabric d, Fig. 2, or other stays arranged in the form of triangles as viewed from a transverse section of the balloon. Gas escaping from the interior would thus have to pass through three layers of material. The space between the walls is filled with gas or air at suitable pressure. The triangulations may be formed of lengths of corrugated material or, as shown in Fig. 5, by tubes h closely packed together so that their points of contact with one another and with the walls of the balloon lie on the corners of triangular spaces. In the form shown in Fig. 3, cords d are employed. Cars, suspending. The cords d shown in Fig. 2 between the two walls of the aerostat may be extended as at e to support the car.
