Gas - producing furnaces.-In the production of nitrogen oxides by flameless combustion of liquid or gaseous fuel, the fire-resistant porous or granular materials are coated or intermingled with substances facilitating the combination of nitrogen and oxygen. Suitable substances a r e t h e metals of the platinum group, or the oxides of chromium, titanium, vanadium, or uranium, and the refractory mass may be composed of compounds of silicon, magnesium, aluminium, the alkaline earths, beryllium, zirconium or cerium. In a suitable apparatus for carrying out the process, the combustion takes place in a chamber V packed with fire-resistant materials either as a granular or a porous mass, or as a series of finely perforated plates &c. The combustible gases are supplied from a mixing-chamber K with inlet pipes Z<1>, Z<2>, Z<3>, for combustible, air, and oxygen, and the gases after combustion pass into a cooling-chamber R with a regulable outlet Z', which enables any desired pressure to be maintained in the apparatus.
