Disk and like mills; wet grinding.-In apparatus for grinding or milling potters' and like materials, and mixing the same with water, in which the coarse material is fed in at the centre and the fine or ground material is carried away by overflow at the top of the pan, the grinding or grading pan is provided at the upper edge with an annular overflow trough having a discharge connexion. The vertical driving - shaft c, Fig. 1, carrying a boss f with radial arms g between which the stones or runners i are arranged, passes through a sleeve b projecting from the base of the pan a, and is supported in bearings d, c. The boss f encloses the sleeve b, which extends above the level of the pan outflow, so as to prevent any material from escaping past the shaft r. An external flange k formed on or attached to the pan and extending above and below the upper edge of the pan forms therewith an annular overflow trough which is provided with a discharge pipe fitted with a valve l. The water and materials to be ground are fed by pipes n, o into a funnellike part m surrounding the boss f and, preferably, secured thereto. The treated material may flow into a second pan p, Fig. 2, for further grading or separating. One or more radial stirring-arms s are carried by the boss r, which is surrounded by a funnel q. The fine material is carried over into the weir and trough formed by the flange x, and passes away by the outlet pipe y. One or more valved discharge openings 2 may be provided in the bottom of the pan through which the heavier particles can be drained away periodically.
