Studs and the like, detachable or externally-applied. -A non-slipping device for the sole or heel of a boot or shoe comprises a base-piece B with studs or a roughened surface on its lower face and provided with a central tapped hole to take a screw D. The part of the screw immediately below the head G is thinned so that, after the threaded part has been screwed through the plate B, tho plate can rotate freely on the screw. The screw is adapted to enter a socket A driven into the tread of the boot. The exterior of the socket mav be corrugated or barbed to prevent its rotation. Pins F may be provided on the upper surface of the plate B, if it is desired to maintain it in a fixed position. The socket A is closed by a screwed plug when the base-piece B is not in use. The end portion of the screw D or of the screw plug may be of slightly smaller diameter than the remainder, to facilitate insertion in the socket. The socket may be closed by a revolving shutter. In a modification, the screw D is replaced by a spigot which is split lengthwise at its end, the springy prongs thus formed being forced together as the spigot is inserted in the socket. The Provisional Specification describes also modifications in which:-(1) the base-piece is provided with a central stud, having laterally projecting pins, which is inserted into the socket and secured by a bayonet joint, the plug for closing the socket when the base-piece is not in use being similarly attached ; (2) a spigot on the basepiece is used, the hollow rounded head of which is split and filled with india-rubber or similar compressible substance to cause the socket to be tightly gripped as the spigot is forced in.
