Abstract

25,525. Daniels, 0, Nov. 7. Franking - machines; inking - apparatus; counting-apparatus; printing-apparatus combined with recording-apparatus.-A machine for franking letters, post cards, &c. is constructed so that packages of various thicknesses can be stamped, and a registering-device is also provided for printing records on cards introduced through a separate slot of the casing. The printing-plate has an oscillating movement, and prints marks in two colours, and the inking-pad, which is removable for renewing purposes, is formed in two parts for receiving the different inks. The letters may be registered by an adjustable slide which is moved when a second print is to be impressed on a letter. The letters are placed against stops Q<1> on an adjustable slide Q, Fig. 1, on a support D covered with a rubber layer 6, and the letters are raised to printing position by means of a lever H pivoted to a vertical shaft A. The package is pressed up against a plate S formed of four parts carried by spring-controlled rods L, a guide opening being formed in the parts through which the printing-die 11 passes. The die 11. is carried by a drum W and is moved from the position shown in the full lines in Fig. 1, where it engages an ink-pad formed of two parts x, y, Fig. 7, to the position shown by dotted lines by means of levers R, R<1>, shaft 8, and vertical supports 9, the die being inverted as the supports 9 descend by the engagement of a toothed segment on drum W with studs 11', 11<2>. Two of the rods L are formed with pins, which operate respectively a counting-device X, Fig. 2, and a registering- device X' from which prints can be taken at the desired time on check cards, introduced through a slot in the casing, by a hand-lever which operates a platen 12 normally pressed outwards by a spring m. The registering- apparatus is fitted with an ink-roller J on a spring-controlled handle M. The roller J is located in a compartment 25 closed by a lid 25<1> and bolt 26. As shown in Fig. 7, the multiple ink-pad x, y can be removed when desired for refilling. The apparatus is so arranged that prints cannot be obtained without operating the counting and registering devices. The printing-surface is formed of an outer portion which prints the value of the stamp &c. and an inner portion may be formed of adjustable types for printing the date &c. Also the printing-surface of the registering- device X<1> is combined with devices for printing other marks such as an eagle and the value of the stamp.
