Abstract
20,380. Bryan, A., and Mountfort, L. F. Sept. 7. [Addition to 3699/12.] Actuating.-In apparatus as described in the parent Specification for intermittently operating sewage or like valves and comprising a rotary non-reversing valve element placed alternately in the open and closed positions by means of a one-way clutch, the driving-element of which is actuated by electric, hydraulic, or other power, the elements of the clutch are made to interlock positively, when engaged, so that no relative or overrunning movement can occur between the valve and the actuating-gear. As shown in Fig. 1, the driven element of the clutch consists of a disk a keyed to the valve spindle band provided with square notches a<1>, in which there engages a spring-controlled pawl c on an arm c' oscillated on the spindle b by means of a quadrant d engaging with a rack d<1> connected to a plunger e operated by hydraulic or electric means. When the plunger commences its return stroke, a cam g engages the end of a lever f fulcrummed on the arm c' and withdraws the pawl c from the notch in which it is engaged so that the arm can make an idle return stroke. The arrangement will retain the valve in either open or closed positions if the plunger is maintained stationary at either end of its stroke. Fig. 3 shows modified apparatus in which the arm c' is oscillated by means of a continuously or intermittently rotated crank-plate e<1> and a connecting-rod e. The lever f is turned by means of a lever h the other arm of which engages with a cam g on the crank-plate. As shown in Fig. 10 the clutch bolt c is formed with a forked inner end which embraces a pheripheral flange a<2> on the disk a and is provided with lugs c<3>, which engage with slots or gaps in the flange when the bolt is drawn outwards under the influence of a spring c<4>. The driven element is released when a lever presses the bolt inwards. An arrangement for giving intermittent motion to a valve spindle b by means of a rotating wheel c is shown in Fig. 11. The pawl c is carried on the face of the wheel and in the position shown is about to be moved out of engagement by a cam g and lever f. The spindle b is then stationary until the pawl arrives at the notch 2. A quarter-revolution of the spindle follows, and the pawl is again released by a cam g<1>.
