Abstract

10,824. Siemens, F. K. May 7. Open-hearth furnaces. -- Relates to regenerative gas furnaces of the kind described in Specification 23,534/09, in which one end of a long hearth is heated to a high temperature by a horseshoe flame extending across it, a portion of the flame being withdrawn for heating the remainder of the hearth. In one modification, Fig. 2, where it is desirable that ingots &c. should travel straight through the furnace instead of being withdrawn at one side, the gas and air ports are arranged at the sides of the hearth so that the flame forms an arch. In another arrangement, Fig. 4, for heating dusty materials the horseshoe flame is confined to a combustion chamber at one end so that dust is not carried into the regenerators. In another form, Fig. 5, the finishing hearth is made narrow to concentrate the heat by arranging the gas and air ports above one another. In another modification, Fig. 6, for wide hearths, three or more sets of ports are provided, the middle ports h serving alternately as supply and exit passages.
