Abstract

4855. Anderson, N. J., Anderson Manufacturing- Co. 4, 1911. Feed openings for solids, regulating; safety devices for charging-apertures.-The carbidefeed valve 68, Fig. 2, is carried by a spring- controlled rod 55 working in a stuffing-box 50 in the top of the carbide chamber 42, and is operated by a lever 57 carrying at one end a hand grip 62 and connected to the casing at the other end by a link 57<a>. The chamber 42 is screwed into the top 40 of the generator until a flange 44 makes a gastight joint with the top 40. The charging aperture 86, Figs. 1 and 9, of the carbide chamber is covered by the end of a lever 94 supported on a bracket 89 and locked to the latter by a bolt 99, so that the aperture cannot be uncovered without withdrawing this bolt. The lever is connected at its other end to a safety valve 80<a>, which is opened when the lever is moved to uncover the charging aperture, allowing gas to escape to a point of safety. The generator is charged with water through a seal 36, Fig. 1, which may be provided with a funnel 39. Gas passes to a washer 68, Fig. 1, filled with liquid in a similar manner.
