Abstract

3547. Meyer, A. Feb. 11, 1911, [Convention date]. Sides and framing; doors f o r passenger vehicles. - The bodies of railway carriages, automobiles, &c. are constructed by assembling upon a wooden or metal framework panels of sheet metal, such as iron, steel, aluminium, or copper, previously shaped and faced with a vitreous enamel. The metal surface is first craned, the back is coated with a thin layer of vitreous enamel, and the metal is fired at 900‹ to discover fragments of impurities, which are removed by perforating the metal where swellings appear in the enamel. The sheets are then well rolled and shaped, and the surface is subjected to the roughening action of a stream of carborundum or the like, after which the sheets are again fired at 700‹, the surface is cleaned in an acid bath, and the first vitreous layer is applied at about 1000‹. An enamel suitable for use with the sheet steel known as "Martin's" is composed of the following parts per cent:- borax 45, quartz 25, torrified flint 5, felspar 16, carbonate of potash 5, saltpetre 2À75, oxide of cobalt 0À25, dioxide of manganese 0À75, oxide of iron 0À25. The decorative layers of enamel are superposed on this first layer. The enamel is made thinner at the edges and around holes and notches. Figs. 1 and 2 show the framework of a dining-car upon which the covering of enamelled plates is to be placed. The spaces A below the window spaces B are each first covered with a rectangular plate formed along its lower edge with a flange to fit below the longitudinal tie a, and fixed above to the central framing b, and at the sides to the uprights g. A similar plate fixed above to the brace c is arranged to cover the space between each pair of uprights g. The window frames of enamelled sheet metal, shaped as shown in Figs. 5 and 7, are then fixed by the flanges i to the members b, c, g, and cover some of the fixing-screws of the plates already in position. The carriage corners are each covered by a curved panel which may be in one piece with the flat panels covering the adjoining side framing and the partition f. Above the longitudinal brace c, long panels, Figs. 34 and 35, are employed, being fixed by screws to the top transome d, and at the bottom to the brace c by screws with wide flat heads engaging notches in the lower bend of the panel. Spaces between adjacent panels are covered by strips of enamelled sheet metal fixed in various ways. Hooks a<1>, Figs. 25 and 27, soldered to the back of the covering-strips, may engage spring or other catches a<3>, a<2>, fixed to the framework, or spring tongues a', Fig. 29, or continuous spring strips a<5>, Fig. 31, fixed to the framework may bear directly on the covering- strips. Each door may be fitted with a panel having a window opening, Figs. 8 and 9, the edges of the panel being covered by a frame of wood or of enamelled sheet metal. Methods of covering other types of railway carriages in a similar way with enamelled sheet metal, are described in detail in the Specification.
