Abstract
3459. Aldis, A. C. W. Feb. 12. Periscopes; optical systems; telescope systems. -In periscopes, apparatus for examining the interior of guns, and similar apparatus in which the length of the device is desired to be variable, the usual arrangement of two telescopes in afocal adjustment is employed in such a way that an image can be transmitted down a tube for any length without appreciable loss of light. Fig. 1, which illustrates a device for examining a gun-barrel, shows a system comprising, as usual, two eyepieces c, g and a telescopic objective d, but between one of the eyepieces, as g, and the lens d a series of erecting-systems can be introduced, each consisting of a condenser e, h and an objective f, i. The condenser is placed at the focal plane of images coming through the other eyepiece c, and the objectives on either side of it are conjugate with respect to it. The last eyepiece is placed at g, g<1>, or g<2>, according as two, one, or no additional systems are used. Supports k hold the instrument in position, and means are provided for illuminating the interior. In periscopes, the apparatus is so designed that dry air can be passed into the inner and outer tubes.
