Abstract

191,142. Narayan, P. Oct. 4, 1921. Reservoir pens; pencil, pen, and like point-protectors.-A reservoir pen without a detachable cap is provided with positive means, readily operated by the fingers of one hand, for sliding the pen into and out of the writing position, the nibcarrying member automatically operating a closing lid in the sliding movement; a safety device is also provided for stopping the flow of ink when the pen is not in the writing position. A self-filling pen of the collapsable-sac type is shown in Fig. 1, wherein the sac 3 and nib-carrying socket 2 are slidable as a whole within the barrel 7 and are operated by a button 13 upon a pin 12 which slides within a longitudinal groove 11 in the fixed cap 10. The cap is provided with a spring-hinged lid 15 with an inwardly-projecting tail-piece 16 arranged so that it operates to raise the lid when it is met by the nib-carrying socket in its outward movement. The pin 12 carrying the sliding button 13 is secured above the extremity of a light lever 19 hinged to the socket and carrying a, pad 20 at its forward end which presses upon the opening of the nib 1 and prevents escape of ink when the pen is not in the writing position. When the pen is projected the obliquity of the slot 11 causes the pin 12 to press upon the lower end of the lever 19 and raise the pad 20 from the nib. The sac is collapsed in the usual manner by pressing upon it a metal strip 17 operated by a hinged lever 18. The strip 17 is connected to a spring lever attached to one of a pair of lugs 8 which project from a ring 6 and slide in longitudinal grooves 9 in the inner wall of the pen barrel. The ring 6 surrounds the sac 3 near its lower end and is attached to a metal strip 5 extending beneath the reservoir and attached at its upper end to a flange 4 on the nib-carrying socket. Fig. 2 shows the upper portion of a non-self-filling pen, wherein a hinged lid 15 is opened by a leaf spring 31 secured at its lower end to the bottom of a chamber 22. The pen 1 and feed-bar 21 are projected and retracted by a button 13, slidable within a slot 29, and the lid 15 is automatically opened when the pen is sufficiently projected for the stud 32 upon the leaf spring to slip within the recess 33 at the bottom of the feed-bar. The feed-bar has a strip 26, of indiarubber or similar material, which prevents the escape of ink when the ink passage 25 and the passage 23 leading from the reservoir are not in alignment.
