Abstract
5872. Neuberger, D. M. March 8. Spray evaporators.-In evaporating liquids, in order to concentrate or dry them, by atomizing the liquid into a current of air or other gas, the operation is effected in such manner that a number of zones or strata are formed in the apparatus, the concentrated or dry product collecting at its base. For this purpose, the atomizing devices 4, 8, and the air inlet 13 and outlet 15, are so arranged that the entering sheet of spray and the sheets of air entering and leaving the chamber are directed horizontally, and at angles, in plan, one to the others. In the construction illustrated, the spray and the outflowing air are directed oppositely, and the incoming air at right-angles to both of these. The liquid enters through nozzles 4 or is sprayed by jets of air entering through nozzles 8. The air for effecting the evaporation passes over a heating- coil 12 and enters at such velocity as to avoid rebound from the opposite wall of the chamber, which is made polygonal in form to prevent the lormation of eddies. The air in the lowest zone of the chamber, in which the products collect, is at rest, and may be cooled in order to raise its specific gravity and thus preserve the stratification. The product is discharged through a revolving gate 14. Any particles carried away by the air are retained in a chamber 17 which may be made of gauze &c. The invention is applied to any liquid containing solids or liquid in solution, suspension, or emulsion, for example, milk, cream, blood, bile, sugar, glucose, dyes, mineral waters, salts, and metallic slimes.
