Water paints. - Iron and steel articles are protected from rusting by twice coating with a solution or emulsion of oil in water, obtained by treating mineral oil with soap, or with oleic acid, turkey-red oil, fats, oils, or resin and an alkali. The articles are dried after the first coating. In treating files, the files are cleaned, immersed in a diluted oil emulsion, dried, the tang is annealed, and the files are immersed in an emulsion which is less diluted.
