Abstract

29,361. Daniels, I. S. Dec. 17. Socks.-A sock or elevator adapted to be inserted in the heel ends of boots and shoes consists of a series of ribs or ridges of indiarubber, &c., arranged in spiral form, or in a series of concentric rings and parts of rings, the ribs or ridges being moulded on a thin layer of the same material, which is secured by sticking or stitching to a foundation layer a of leather, felt, &c. The ribs or ridges are graduated in height, somewhat in dome-shape, from the margin c to the central part e of the heel-seat, and from these are tapered off gradually to the instep, where they merge, as shown, into the skived feathered edge of the foundation a. A recess is left in the centre of the heel, to accommodate the heel-bone; this recess may, however, contain a short rib f of about one-third the height of the adjacent rib. The outer rib c is made broader than the others, to act as a support for them. The foundation a projects beyond the india-rubber, as shown at b, and is made somewhat smaller than the normal size of the boot or shoe, so that it may be worn with two or three different sizes. The sock is secured to the innersole by gumming at the feather end, a tack being also driven in just above the skived edge.
