Separators for gaseous substances.-In apparatus for purifying gases, consisting of a series of perforated co-axial cylinders or cones rotating in opposite directions, washing-water is supplied at the centre of the machine. The cylinders may be arranged in the suction or discharge chambers of a fan, the casing of which may be modified to assist in the purification. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the cylinders e', e<2>, e<3> are arranged on the end walls of a rotary chamber A and on partitions therein. The other sets of cylinders i<1>, i<2>, i<3> carried by disks f<1>, f<2>, f<3> mounted on a shaft D. The shaft D is hollow, and carries spraying-nozzles k<1>, k<2>, k<3>. The water reaching the wall of the chamber A is caught in recesses l<1>, l<2>, l<3> and carried to the next division of the chamber or out of the machine by pipes m<1>, m<2>, m<3>. In another form, the water is caught by scoops on the wall of the chamber A and thrown back over the cylinders. This form is also applicable to the purification of gas by means of bog iron ore. Several forms of perforations and projections on the cylinders e', e<2>, e<3>, i<1>, i<2>, i<3> are described, including one in which the projections on the cylinders of one set are formed as suction nozzles. The cylinders may be corrugated. Fig. 23 shows the cylinders arranged in the suction chamber of a fan. The fan casing is formed with an inner wall M arrangel at a uniform distance from the edges of the fanblades F, and outer walls N<2> forming a double cone, along the surface of which the gas and water are thrown from the wall M. The blades F may be set obliquely, so as to throw the gas and water outwards as well as radially.
