Ratchet braces or like implements having ratchets of the face-clutch type are constructed .so as to utilize the whole of the diametrical surfaces of the brace head for the ratchet mechanism so that, as compared with existing braces, a smaller head is needed and more confined spaces can be worked in. The additional sectional area occupied by the usual transmitting rings, sleeves, or cores in the planes of the toothed faces is dispensed with and the necessity for springs is avoided. The head A', A<2> has right and left handed ratchets adapted to engage corresponding washers B<1>, B<2>, which are shaped on the outside to receive box sockets or suitable adapters to take the drill, the parts being held together by a loose-headed pin C of small diameter. An arm D with a knob F having a centre f to fit the pin C and with a handle E having a pin e to fit the hole a in the arm A may be combined with the device to form a reversible brace.
