3489. Fletcher, C. G. Feb. 12. Handles; golf and like clubs; croquet and like mallets; billiards, cues for.- The resiliency of golf clubs, base-ball clubs, cricket bats, hockey sticks, croquet mallets, lawn tennis, badminton, racquet, squash, or similar bats or rackets, billiard cues, &c., is increased by the incorporation therein during manufacture of one or more pieces of hippopotamus, rhinoceros, giraffe, or other raw hide or skin. As applied to a golf club, a wedge-shaped piece of the raw hide may be spliced to the handle, Fig. 1, or inserted in the shaft, Fig. 5, or may be used to join the head and shaft together as shown in Fig. 7, or parallel layers of raw hide may be let into the handles and shafts, or the raw hide may constitute the striking-face as shown in Fig. 23. The tips of billiard cues, Fig. 26, may be made of raw hide.
