Abstract
1504. Benn, H. H., Unbreakable Pulley and Mill Gearing Co., and Buck, G. F. Jan. 20. Clutches, friction.-In plate friction clutches, a plate f, carried by the shaft g, Fig. 1, is gripped between the face of drum a and a plate d divided into a number of segments each of which is engaged by a bolt i with a ball-ended nut m bearing on a lever j. A pair of springs h acting on each segment bear against an adjustable screw cover b, on which the levers are pivoted. The cover b is locked in position by a catch carried by the drum a and engaging slots x in the edges of the cover. The levers k may be actuated by a cone, as shown, or by the face of a sliding collar. The carrier b may be secured to the drum by screwed studs, and independent means be provided for adjusting each of the springs h. The plate f may engage a squared collar or nut-like part on the shaft g in order to allow relative movement between the driving and driven parts. Recesses in the segments or in the plate f may contain lubricant, or for the same purpose one or more small segments may be kept in contact with the plate f by light springs. According to the Provisional Specification, the plate d may be in one piece.
